1977 Z28 LT CAMARO FOR SALE

This is the Classic Z28 you have been looking for!!!

I dare say that you will not find another 77 Z28 LT as clean and unmolested as this one. The car is actually much younger than its year indicates, as it has not been licensed for the road for over 22 years. These horses want to run, I’m opening the gate, watch out!

Car is loaded with just about every available option Chevrolet had at the time.

  • Camaro Type LT (LT stands for “Luxury Touring”)
  • Center floor console
  • Tinted glass
  • Air conditioning
  • AM/FM Stereo Radio with 8-track stereo tape system with dual speakers
  • Body side bright molding
  • Rally wheels
  • Style trim group
  • Deluxe color-keyed seat belts and front seat shoulder belts
  • Floor mats, front and rear, color-keyed
  • Comfortilt steering wheel
  • Two-position adjustable driver’s seat back
  • Power windows
  • Intermittent windshield wipers
  • Cruise-Master speed control
  • Rear window defogger
  • Interior Décor/Quiet Sound Group
  • Special instrumentation
  • Auxiliary lighting group
  • Power door locks
  • Bumper guards, front and rear
  • Door edge guard moldings
  • Spoilers front and rear
  • Sport suspension
  • Positraction
  • Dual horns
  • Heavy-duty radiator
  • Stowaway spare tire

This Z28 LT Camaro is 100% factory Chevrolet inside and out (original paint), no other modifications, except for the rebuilt engine (not original block, intake manifold, carburetor, or air cleaner), headers, and exhaust system. The engine is not extreme; it was just built to be a strong reliable power plant! I planned on seeing how many more horses I could stuff under the hood, with a new super high horsepower crate engine, to make it the muscle car that I never had when I was younger. But, the years have passed by, and my body has not aged as well as my Z28’s, so I have decided it is time to sell the car.

Regarding its horsepower, I can only tell you from my first hand driving experiences, that it is substantially greater than most cars on the road. I never got around to putting it on a dyno, and I would be only guessing if I came up with a number. But, I will tell you that we purchased the new body style 1984 Corvette when they first came out. It was my wife's car but "sometimes" she would let me drive it. It was always my opinion that my 77 Z28 would outperform her Corvette. She was always afraid to fully test out my theory when we were both on the road! I built the engine for strong mid range performance. I was not so interested in spinning the tires but I was interested in very fast acceleration and a high top speed. I just remember that while going down the road at 45 to 65 mph range, stomping on it would launch you like a rocket ship, leaving the car that was messing with you only visible in your rear view mirror. Oh, the good old days! As I recall, the tires would break loose on some hard surfaces (dependent on tire size and tread). I added the wider tires for better road handling performance. Obviously, changing the ratio in the rear end gearing would give the car dragster burnout capability. You can see, if you watch closely, in one of the videos, on the linked page, that the posi-traction is working properly during my mini gravel burnout.

I am the original owner. It was purchased in CA and has been here since. The car has always been garaged in the Bay Area of Northern California and has no accident, rust, or salt damage. No one has ever smoked in the car. The Z28 has a rebuilt engine with only 40K miles approximately on it. Starts easily. Redlines around 6500 RPM. Really fast acceleration. Never raced or abused. Used as a freeway commute vehicle. Not licensed for the road since 1985. Have driven it regularly on the back road to keep everything lubricated and in good running condition. The Z28 LT models are somewhat rare from my research. Located in San Ramon, CA, 94583. You will be hard pressed to find another 1977 Z28 LT as clean as this one.

Someone is going to take this gem away, make it you! Car is being sold as is. Per California DMV regulations, California buyers will be required to immediately non-op vehicle as required smog equipment is absent and would have to be added, and car would have to get a smog certificate, all at the buyer's expense, before the car could be put back on the road in California.
  • 148778 miles
  • 350 cubic inch engine with four bolt mains
  • Automatic transmission (original factory)
  • Headers
  • High performance intake manifold and four barrel carburetor
  • Cam for mid-range performance
  • Original orange metallic #78 factory paint with factory hood decal
  • Centerline wheels (I have original painted wheels with the Z28 chrome caps and outer chrome rings. They will go with the car. See pictures on linked page.)
  • Tan LT interior (buckskin knit-cloth seat with saddle interior) in excellent shape except for sagging headliner and cracked vinyl on center console armrest and broken plastic front door handle mounts (forward most mounts).
  • Power windows and door locks
  • Original radio, AM, FM, 8 track tape player, works great (Tapes included)
  • Air conditioning system needs to be recharged
  • Glove box interior is removed (CB radio days). Have original glove box, bracket, and plastic dome lens for glove box.
  • Also included are: Original build sheet, a 1977 Camaro dealer brochure, 4 knockout key tabs from the original keys, 1977 dealer color chart, original Bill of Sale, a April 1977 Car and Driver Magazine that features the "New Z/28 Camaro", and Chevrolet Service Manuals

1977 Z28 Chevrolet Camaro History

The Z28 was re-introduced to the buying public in the spring of 1977 as a 1977-1/2 in response to dramatically increasing sales of Pontiac's Trans Am, which sold over 46,000 units in 1976 and accounted for half of all Firebird sales that year. Like the Trans Am, the revived Camaro Z28 was an instant hit and was powered by a 350 cubic-inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor and 185 horsepower (175 horses with California emissions equipment), with most cars sold equipped with air conditioning and an automatic transmission for a comfort-oriented public. The cars were also available with a Borg-Warner Super T-10 4-speed manual transmission and minimal option packaging for those buyers interested in a performance-oriented vehicle. The half-year model was one of the few American performance vehicles available at the time. The car was capable of turning in quarter-mile times comparable to many of the 1960s muscle cars, and the chassis was developed to reward the driver with a first-class grand touring experience, capable of outstanding handling, especially in the hands of a competent high-performance driver. More than one Z28 was sold as a stripped performance car, and in this trim the Z28 could outperform Pontiac Trans Ams and Corvettes on highways and canyon roads.

In other developments, intermittent wipers were offered as a new option and the 250-6 became the standard engine for both the sport coupe and luxury LT models. The 145-horsepower 305 continued as the base V8 and the four-barrel 350 optional on sport coupe and LT models was uprated to 170 horsepower. This year the optional "Bumperettes" were offered for the LT models(front bumper only).

The History of the Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro is a "pony car" made in North America by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors. It was introduced on 26 September 1966 as a 1967 model year and was designed as a competing model to the Ford Mustang. The car shared the platform and major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced in 1967. Four distinct generations of the car were produced before production ended in 2002. A new Camaro is expected to roll off assembly lines in January 2009.
